The International Summer School "Curating in Context" returns for its fourth edition, offering a unique platform for rethinking curatorial practices in contemporary art and beyond. Organized by Lokomotiva and curated by Biljana Tanurovska-Kjulavkovski, this year's program will take place from 25 to 31 August 2024 in Struga.
This year's edition features 7 participants who will engage in a series of workshops, lectures, and collaborative projects.
This year's School offers a space for rethinking curatorial practices beyond organized disciplines of knowledge, where artistic, socio-political, economic, ecological, and cultural contexts can be reimagined. This year's School also emphasizes thinking through different prisms of intersectionality, feminism, ecology, and ecotopia, among others, which require different ways of thinking, reflecting, and approaching, creating different curatorial practices.
The program will include lectures, workshops, mentoring sessions and work on developing curatorial ideas, including: Curatorial Pluralities with Biljana Tanurovska-Kjulavkovski (MKD), Thinking Together about the Political and the Curatorial: Affect, Rationality and Performativity with Slavčo Dimitrov (MKD), Sowing and Harvesting Utopias with Elena Korovin (DEU), Yugoslav Heritage, Self-Organization and Curating: Lessons from Another World with Marijana Cvetković (SRB), Learning from the Rural: Collaboration as a Feminist Curatorial Method by Katalin Erdodi (AUT/HUN), Feminist and Ecofeminist Discourses and Practices in Contemporary Art by Suzana Milevska (MKD) and artistic exchanges with Viktorija Ilioska (MKD/DEU)/Curating Futures through the Study of Horror and Filip Jovanovski (MKD)/The City is Public.
The International Summer School "Curating in Context" 2024 is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of North Macedonia, the Goethe Institute - Skopje, the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Performance Situation Room/LLB 3 project supported by Creative Europe.
In parallel with the summer school, Lokomotiva will also host the Modular School, organized in collaboration with Nomad Dance Academy Croatia, with which the participants will have exchanges. The Modular School is a program focused on the field of performing arts and contemporary dance, uniting 5 participants who will engage in an enriched exchange of ideas and practices with the participants of the summer school. The participants of the Modular School will organize daily sessions for bodywork and sharing their choreographic and performative practices, along with attending some of the lectures. Additionally, they will organize an open lecture for all interested attendees in Struga. The collaboration aims to broaden the perspectives of both groups, encouraging interactions between artists and cultural workers from different backgrounds, generations and experiences.
In addition to workshops and lectures, participants will engage in collaborative projects, individual work, and visits to culturally significant sites such as the village of Vishni, organized by INKA - Initiative for Independent Cultural Activism.
