The shoes worn by Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz sold for a record 26 million euros

The legendary red shoes worn by Judy Garland in the film The Wizard of Oz have sold for a record 26.5 million euros.

The sparkly shoes that brought Dorothy home in the 1939 hit were purchased by an anonymous buyer.

The total amount, including taxes, exceeds 30 million euros, officially making the shoes the most expensive item ever sold at auction.

They also surpassed the white dress that Marilyn Monroe wore in the 1955 film, The Seven Year Itch.

According to the original story from the book, the glitter shoes were silver, but for the film, red was chosen to make them stand out more on the yellow track.

It is believed that several more such pairs exist. Two are known to be in various museums in the United States, and one is owned by a private collector.

However, the exact number of shoes used in the film is unknown.
