Although this year's MTV Awards were held a day late, fans and everyone who witnessed the event were still thrilled.
The red, or in this case, black carpet, was filled with interesting fashion solutions, most of which paid homage to the past.
Music industry stars and a host of other elite figures gathered at the UBS Arena in New York City to have fun, but also to show off their best side.
The event, which is being held for the 40th time this year, has been marked by a large number of extravagant creations over the decades.
And just as Madonna left a lasting mark at the first MTV Awards with her performance in a wedding dress, this year several stars paid tribute to the queen of pop music.
One of them was Sabrina Carpenter who appeared in a vintage Bob Mackie dress, which Madonna wore to the Oscars in 1991.
Taylor Swift, who once again proved her dominance on the music scene, was dressed in a Dior creation and was reminiscent of Cher from the legendary 90s film Clueless.
There were also several Gothic-style fashions, and we saw again the Versace dress that Elizabeth Hurley turned heads in in 1996.
