43 translations in competition for the “Dragi” award

The award for the best translation into Macedonian “Darling” was established in 2022, and the first honorary recognition was awarded to Dragi Mihajlovski (1951-2022), a Macedonian writer, translator, essayist and university professor. In addition to his prose works, Mihajlovski left a lasting mark on Macedonian culture with his translations of works by Shakespeare, Milton, Shelley, Keats, Blake, Eliot, Milton, etc. He also published several studies and essays in the field of translation theory, and with his views on translation he also influenced the students of the “Blaže Koneski” Faculty of Philology in Skopje, where he was a professor.

This year, by the deadline for submitting nominations (July 1, 2024), the organizer's editorial office received a record 43 works translated into Macedonian, both in print and electronic format. 40 translators are competing for the award, which is more than last year. The books are published by 18 publishing houses or individuals, and the translations are made from 18 different languages. Forty foreign authors from all genre categories are included – novels, short stories, children's books, plays. All of this testifies to a diverse and extensive translation production, but also to very strong competition.

The three-member committee for the award for the best translation into Macedonian “Dragi” this year will consist of Dr. Jana Mihajlovska (librarian and president of the Library Association of Macedonia; representative of Dragi Mihajlovski’s family), Dr. Zorica Nikolovska (full professor at the Department of German Language and Literature and translator; representative proposed by the “Blaže Koneski” Faculty of Philology) and Vladimir Jankovski (writer and translator, representative proposed by the “Antolog” publishing house).

This year's edition of the "Dragi" award is realized by the publishing house "Antolog" with the support of the Ministry of Culture and in cooperation with the Faculty of Philology "Blaže Koneski" - Skopje.
