Georges Bizet's most famous work is the 1875 opera Carmen, based on the novel (published in 1846) by Prosper Mérimée. Carmen was not an immediate success, and Bizet was greatly disappointed, but was quickly comforted by praise from fellow composers such as Camille Saint-Saëns, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and Claude Debussy, who immediately recognized the opera's beauty.
Soon, audiences began to share the same opinion as these composers, and "Carmen" became one of the most famous operas in history.
